OSAGE NATION RESERVATION, Okla. (January 15, 2025) - In late 2024, the Osage Historical Society (OHS) and Osage Nation began a collaborative effort to transition administrative responsibilities for the White Hair Memorial from OHS to Osage Nation. The White Hair Memorial is a learning center with collections that include resources such as maps, annuity rolls, oral histories, and photographs. The learning center is located in the former home of Lillie Magdalene Morrell Burkhart, a descendant of White Hair (Pawhuska), a previous Osage Chief.
“The White Hair Memorial is an important cultural landmark for the Osage Nation that houses priceless historical documents,” says Osage Nation Cultural, Language, and Education Secretary Vann Bighorse. “We appreciate the Historical Society for maintaining the space and working with us during this exciting transition. We aim to continue honoring the Burkhart family and serving as stewards while offering an educational opportunity to all who want to learn more about Osage culture and history.”
The White Hair Memorial’s facility maintenance is paid through the Lillie Burkhart headright annuity, which continues to be held by OHS. White Hair Memorial hours are Tuesday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday by appointment only. Closures follow the Osage Nation office schedule. To schedule a visit, please call (918) 538-2417. The White Hair Memorial is free and open to the public. To find out more, please visit www.osageculture.com.
